| ‘Boeing MRO to become a reality by 12 / 12 / 12’ |

BRUSHING aside all speculation that Boeing’s Maintenance Repairs and Overhaul(MRO) facility would be a reality, Dr Dinesh Keskar, president Boeing India Limited said that construction work had already been kicked-off at SEZ –MIHAN and would be over by December 12, 2012.
Dr Keskar was addressing the media after visiting construction site along with K M Unni, COO SUB Head MRO, Board Member, Air India. He took review of the work in progress and met Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) officials.
Dr Keskar said, all the roadblocks have been removed and 250 workers are toiling hard day and night at the construction site. The project would take off in 2013, he assured. "There were rumours due to delay in commencement of the project. But I am putting on record that the construction would be completed by 12/ 12 / 12," he claimed.
THE wall fencing work has been completed and concrete mixing work was going on at a faster pace, Dr Keskar stated.
Larsen and Toubro (L & T) has been roped in for construction of the project and CBRE is handling the management of the project.
An area of 50 acre has been reversed for the Boeing MRO. It would involve an investment of USD 100 million (approximately Rs. 450 crore). Two hangars in size of 100 meters into 100 meters would be built to accommodate big aircraft like Boeing-777 and Boeing 747 – 800.
An area of 24,000 square meters has been reserved for office and maintenance work where skilled engineers would do their job work.
The MRO would have greenfield state-of-the-art facility which would have solar power, natural lighting system and rain water harvesting system, he said.
He said the MRO project would render its services to airlines that were at flying distance of five hours from Nagpur. As the project is being set up in SEZ, There would taxation benefits and Boeing with the help of MADC would demand more benefits from Maharashtra Government. After Shanghai, Nagpur will become second place to have MRO facility.The Shanghai facility had commenced operation two year ago.
Replying to query, he admitted that there was delay in the project due to global downtown in the economy and every sector was grappling hard to withstand the situation.
"We were no exception to it. Now, normalcy has been restored and we are here to fulfill our commitment," he claimed.
He said that Boeing has scanned Nagpur for MRO due to its logistic important.The city has 40 to 45 degree Celsius temperature which is a requisite for the hassle- free flying of aircraft."It is not close to sea and there is no question of erosion or water contamination. Such weather conditions are prevalent in cities like phoenix and Florida in South America," he noted.
He said, "The issues pertaining to setting up to second runway or taxi way has been finally cleared as MADC has promised that it would make all possible arrangement for landing and take off of aircraft".
Tata Group company, TAL has already commenced operations in the SEZ and was making floor beams for Boeing Dreamliner aircraft. The TAL facility was also a part off–set deal between the India Government and Boeing.
Boeing was also looking for local talent to be absorbed in the project and has discussed the issue with VNIT from where he had graduated.
"I am a son of Vidarbha and schooled at Nagpur and Amravati. It is my social responsibility to offer employment to people of Vidarbha," he stated.
Unni said that Air India has joined hands with Boeing for the MRO."We have such facility in Mumbai. However, the expansion of existing airport has created a dearth of space and MRO at Nagpur would bridge the gap. We will provide services to five aircraft in a month and also to other airlines," he added. |
